Music Review – Alestorm “Back Through time”
Back Through Time is Alestorm’s newest album combining HardHeavy riffs (and a bit of old school shredding), with some crazy pirate themes to produce a wierd folky style of metal that can only be described as “Pirate Metal”. It is a fast paced ride that isn’t quite the concept album that there previous albums can be interperated as. There isn’t so much a story to be told as much as there is Rum to be drank, treasure to find and ass to kick.
This album maintains that classic Alestorm sound that had been established by their previous albums Captain Morgan’s Revenge and Black Sails at Midnight, and that is not a bad thing. No bad really embodies Pirate Metal quite like Alestorm and while this album is a great representation thereof, it doesn’t really break new boundaries or expand the genre. Not every album needs to be a musical epihany and this album is just good stuff. Fans of the genre or anyone that spit there drink out when I said “Pirate Metal” should definatly check this out.
For the uninitated, Pirate Metal is more or less Folk Metal with a accordions, trumpets, horns, violins, and even an epic Vibraslap solo. It gives the subgenre a decidely well… “pirate” feel it is one of disney’s great failures that Alestorm hasn’t been on a Pirates of the Carribean Soundtrack (much like Thor’s failure to include Amon Amarth on it’s soundtrack).
The album has some real quality tracks on it but my favorite it their newest contribution to the world of drinking metal (another genre that the bacn has made great progess in) “Rum”.
This is by no means a can’t miss album, but for fans of the genre or the curious, this is an album that will have you raiding spanish costal cities in no time.
Score 7/10
