The Way- a short story

The following is a true(ish) story of a true(ish) faith, their practitioners refer to it only as “The Way”

What really went on with “The Way”? Was it a group of pranksters? Rebels with barely any cause fighting for their seat at an empty table? Or an actual Cult with a hidden religious agenda?

To start my interview to try to delve into the events of the past I went to the place where it all started: Whassamadda U. I found my way to the offices of a Mr. Dominic K. Rodriguez, the Vice Principal of the school.

Me: So Mr. Rodriguez did you know a student named Jonathan that went here? Read more

Use Your Illusions 2

Civil War

The only tune on either Use Your Illusions albums to credit original drummer Steven Adler. Supposedly, the recording of this song was so difficult for him, it solidified the band decision to fire him. Great epic anti-war song

14 Years

An Izzy tune this matches his signature laid back style. Not many know, but this song is thinly veiled an in actuality is about Izzy’s relationship with childhood friend Axl Rose. An interesting listen with that in mind. Read more

Use Your Illusions 1

Right Next Door To Hell

One of the weaker but catchier songs on this album. This song was a real early one for the Guns but didn’t get recorded on their first two albums. Decent song, high energy

Dust N Bones

One of my favorite GNR songs. This song is sung but one of those most under-rated guitar players/song writers Izzy Stradlin. This is one of the more old school rock and roll songs GNR does, however its one of the best.

Live n Let Die

A cover of the Paul McCartney and Wings song that appeared on the 007 movie. Great cover with a blasting chorus. Guns n Roses may or may not have done it better than the original, but they sure brought their trademark high energy rock n roll vibe to the track. If a fan of the original check it out, if not, take it or leave it. Read more

Nice Guy, Nice Try….The Friend Zone

Nice Guy, Nice Try, the Friend Zone

“You’re a good friend,” the phrase that puts such a fake smile on my face. Friendship is definitely an important component in many people’s lives as it relates to their social relationships. We often hear folks talk about the “friend zone” hence, I write this piece on such concept from my own perspective as a heterosexual, Black Male, in his early 20’s on the Friend Zone.

First, let’s define the Friend Zone (F-Zone). The Friend Zone is an invisible space, occupied by a person who attempted to enter a romantic relationship with a friend but failed to do so. As a result, this individual is put into the realm of just being the person’s friend with no chance of any future romance with that person. These so-called romantic attempts are usually prompted during a conversation, when one of the individuals expresses interest on the other and the response is something like the following: “you’re like a brother to me,” or “I only see you as a friend.” This tells the other person, subtly or not so subtly, that they just want to be friends, and as a result that person is put in the Friend Zone. Teaching How to Survive the Zombie Apocalypse

Teaching How to Survive
the Zombie Apocalypse

By: Josue “Josh” Alvarez Mapp(a.k.a. DJ Mappquest)

Ever since I heard (rumor or not) that Michigan State University is going to offer a class this fall semester on how to survive the zombie apocalypse, I have been stoked.  I could easily teach this class (either at my old community college, Delta College or at Sacramento State, or both).  Ask any of my friends and anyone who has been around me during any phase of my college career.  I have had many zombie apocalypse fans.  I am also addicted to the concept of zombies, possible or impossible.

Let me get this straight, I am not sure if the possibility exists for zombies.  However, it is an idea one should not joke about.  It is one of those things that if you are prepared, than if it ever does occur, cool.  If it never occurs, then it is as useless as everything else we learned, like cursive. Wardrobe Wednesdays!

I love fashion, it’s everything. Looks mean a lot to me. By looks I don’t mean whether a person is good looking or not. But how a person presents themselves. The way you dress can say so much about you. It describes your mind and your attitude. If you choose to walk outside of the house in sweat pants, I can assume that today is a lazy day. If you walk out in a cute dress, it might mean you’re in a fun mood. Your fashion plays a big part in defining who you are and what kind of things you like or don’t like. Even the type of music you listen to. I started to develop a sense of style a little bit more than a year ago. As this fashion sense started to grow, so did my confidence. I began to love all the little pieces I put together. Everyday I dressed nice I felt like I done something creative. Because creating a cute outfit does take some thinking. It tied in with my desire to make my own clothes. I like to sew, cut and glue things. When combining all these hobbies together, the out come is an awesome shirt or updated shorts or cute socks! Chris Joss “No Work No Play” Album review

Tower of Power killing it at a rave is the best way for me to describe Chris Joss‘ album “No Work No Play“. Sometimes when album combines different styles of music together there is normally an imbalance. not the case on this album. The funk and electronic stylings work together perfectly to create an electrified atmosphere on record. When I first came across this city I was unsure of what I was going to listen to, but after one car ride I was sold on this album. Even the cover itself is funky a 70s style view of skyline from the ground level. The art and the music are an equal trip. Read more

Review: Jeffree Star’s “Virginity” EP

If you are able to withstand the shock value sent out by Jeffree Star’s bright pink hair alone, you’ve already been far too desensitized.

But that’s just it; we’ve been desensitized.

I am a big fan of Jeffree Star.  He’s crude, vulgar, freakish, and shamelessly gay–and he’s proud of it.  He’s got more blasphemous tattoos than a Marylin Manson concert, more fabulous than Miss America, and doesn’t give a %#&@!  His release “Beauty Killer” showed that even though his lyrics are far from artistic, good production can make someone with little true talent sound radio-worthy.  I don’t say that to bash him–his talents are not musical, but promotional.  Still, “Beauty Killer” was a masterpiece in it’s own right. Concert Review and Interview – mr. Gnome 4.28.12

After all the amazing concerts I have been to that feature an internationally known headliners, it baffles me that I can forget how much a well executed performance in an intimate space by a band on the rise can shake me to the core. March 28th at Luigi’s was one of those shows. This event marked the first arrival of the Cleveland experimental indie rock duo mr. Gnome to Sacramento. After several years of being unable to see them elsewhere, our paths crossed and I was not let down.

Trayvon Martin and the Media

The Trayvon Martin case is a sad story of a young black male losing his life far before his prime. And the media wants to keep it there, at the black part. The surface is clear; a 28 year old male of Caucasian and Latino decent shot a 17 year old black male because he looked “suspicious.” This of course is a clear problem (seemingly racial profiling), but what is really troubling is that Mr. Zimmerman (the trigger man) was not arrested (by arrested I mean they did not handcuff him and hold him until trial). He wasn’t charged for a crime and was let go after he told his side of the story. A young man (a minor at that) was shot and there was no charge. Read more
