Hell On Wheels: First Impressions

I am a fan of Westerns. In my book, Clint Eastwood is cowboy legendary. So I have been slightly intrigued by the new Western-style show Hell On Wheels show on AMC, but never really watched, save for the tail end before Breaking Bad. Recently however, I decided to give it a shot and looked it up on the great media resource known at Netflix.

Music Review: Knife Party’s “Rage Valley” EP

The best way to describe Knife Party’s music is as some kind of large-scale, big-budget projection and lights show–for the ears.  Never has this electro house and dubstep duo disappointed, and they continue their winning streak with their latest installment, “Rage Valley”.

These tracks paint a desert landscape with hooks and drops just as scorching as the Death Valley sun.  Incredibly fresh and cutting-edge, each beat displays their uncanny ability to build suspense and throw musical curveballs at their audience.  Just as thrilling as any Sci-Fi blockbuster, This latest EP refuses to let go. A letter from Anthony Wiener

Dear constituents,

I know you haven’t heard anything from me since the scandal broke less than a year ago, but I felt that I owed my constituents a real explanation. Like every politician, I pretended to be ashamed of my actions and apologized to anyone and everyone I offended or disappointed. But that cannot be further from the truth.

Why Chris Paul should win the MVP award

Okay, what does the MVP mean? The MVP is an acronym for the Most Valuable Player. This award is given to the player most important to his team, who has performed at a high level. But the award is not always given to the most valuable player. Yes, normally the voters do a great job on awarding the most valuable player in basketball. But this award is normally given to the best player in the NBA, not the most valuable. If the award was given to the most valuable player to his team, then Chris Paul would win it hands down. Let us break down the reasons why:

Music Genres

Do you believe in racism? Or are you one of those people who completely deny its existence? Do you tell your colored friends, “I don’t see color”? Do believe racism happens everyday?Well I believe in the latter, which is why I hate Tyler Perry and everything he touches. I hate B.E.T. and I hate Newt Gingrich. I hate Rush Limbaugh and I hate people who question Barack Obama’s “blackness.”  But what gets on my nerves more than anything else in the world, yes, even more on my nerves than when old white people use “rap lingo” to make jokes, is when people do not allow for multiple genres in Hip-hop or rap. Hometown Music

It came to my attention that in my blogs so far I haven’t talked about was the music from my own city of Fairlfield. Fairfield, California’s most well-known act would be the Federation. This group teamed with an E-40 producer Rick Rock and blew up, even landing the smash hit “Hyphy” on MTV. In the city there are various independent labels that come and go. The Hip Hop artists that I know have been building up for the last few years. Read more

What we have learned so far in the playoffs

  • Chris Paul is ridiculous. He is playing out of his mind and is beating a team better than his, with two of their top 5 players hurt.
  • Dirk Nowitzki is still Dirk, but he is going to need more help than Deron Williams next year if he plans to make another run to the playoffs.

CD Review – Storm Corrosion

After years of both hype and mystery, the long-awaited collaboration between the leaders of progressive giants Opeth and Porcupine Tree has surfaced.

Mikael Åkerfeldt and Steven Wilson have been in cahoots for many years, but until now,, the extent of their collaborative efforts has simply been the appearance on one another’s albums. While Åkerfeldt provided some backing vocals and guitar on The Porcupine Tree gem Deadwing, Wilson has famously had a hand in most of Opeth’s albums since Blackwater Park. To hear that they were joining forces in Storm Corrosion was not much of a surprise, but it was still something to get very excited about.
What was a surprise, was when the pair announced that the result of the collaboration included zero metal elements and barely any drums. Considering a third name in this project early on was Mike Portnoy, of Dream Theater fame, it’s not a shock, in hindsight, that his name was removed from the project.

The final product is still a very immersive and intense record  It is heavy in a different way, yet very beautiful and dark.
