Sparky in the Cage : UFC 133 Recap “Cinderella gets punched out at the door”

UFC 133 has just wrapped up and it turned out to be a pretty solid card the Evans/Ortiz main event was a real good fight with a great effort from Tito, but he just could not keep up with the speed and athleticism of “Suga” Rashad Evans. The highlight of the match for Ortiz was a Guillotine choke by Ortiz that almost gave Ortiz the upset.

  • Chad Mendez is going on a tear taking out Rani Yahya in a convincing decision win. Yahya was controlled in all aspects of the match and never really looked in it. Mendez simply ran him over but could not get the finish.
  • Alexander Gustofsson was very impressive in his TKO win over Matt Hamill. He was the more active fighter, he controlled the striking, and he got a great finish. Hamill just looked off this fight, I suspect he was injured going in. He didn’t move well, he didn’t commit to his takedowns, it just wasn’t the best Matt Hamill. He has now dropped two in a row and did not look great in either loss. He really needs to pull it together to save his hopes of climbing the middleweight ladder.
  • Mike Pyle was handled by Rory MacDonald. MacDonald has been one of the most hyped fighters coming up for a while and Mike Pyle is no easy out. He could find himself bouncing off this TKO victory to some upper level competition.
  • Jorge Rivera dropped a split decision to Costantinos Philippou. It was a quality fight between the two and both fighters were going after it to the end. I had Rivera 29-28, but it really could have gone either way.
  • Brian “The Hairrow” Ebersole won an unprecedented $70,000 “thanks for getting those horrible shorts off of TV” bonus from UFC Prez Dana White. He notched a first round KO over Dennis “Banana hammock” Hallman.
  • Vitor Belfort ran over Sexyama. Akiyama said he wanted to stand and bang with “The Phenom” and that turned out to be a bad idea. We will see what Dana has to say on Akiama’s future in the octogon… (author sobs loudly “WHY!?!” ala Nancy Kerrigan)
  • The Evans/Ortiz main event was very quality as I said before. They lined up and scrapped, Ortiz didn’t get punked by Evans, but Evans showed just how far he has came since their 2007 draw.

Some interesting tidbits from the post fight press conference:

  • Vitor Belfort claims that MMA will overcome Soccer in Brazil within three years, which was met with a chorus of laughs from the press conference. (video)
  • Rashad Evans and UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Jon “Bones” Jones continued their war of words, Evans said he isn’t sure he will get to fight Jones for the title and that former rival Quinton “Rampage” Jackson was invited to come train with Evans.
  • Brian Ebersol claims he was concerned with his opponent having a wardrobe malfunction.
  • No word on Sexyama’s future in the UFC update: in a post ufc 133 interview Dana White told mmaheat.com:

Lorenzo (Fertitta) and I have been terrorizing him to go to 170. He can make 170… I just have so much respect for the guy. He’s my Japanese Arturo Gatti. I respect him as a person and as a fighter.
We’ll see what happens. I am not sure.

Good to see Dana is a Akiyama fan. But Auturo Gatti? Yeah Gatti was a warrior no doubt, but is he worthy of being compared to Sexyama?

Matches to make after UFC 133:

  • Evans vs Rampage/Jones winner… obviously.
  • Belfort vs Okami if he beats Anderson Silva for the title… don’t laugh, otherwise maybe Brian Stann/ Chael Sonnen winner/
  • Rory McDonald vs Rick Story, Jake Ellenberger, Josh Koscheck. It is time to see what the kid does against top 10 competition.
  • Alexander Gustafsson vs Rich Franklin, Franklin needs a fight and Gustafsson would make for a good slugfest. Ryan Bader would make a solid fight as well.
  • Chad Mendez vs Kenny Florian, time for a title eliminator, otherwise the incoming Hatsu Hioki would make for a great fight.
  • Yoshihiro Akiyama vs any Welterweight… please oh and make him grapple.
