Regime Change in Raider Nation (1/10/2012)

If you haven’t heard, the Oakland Raiders fired Head Coach Hue Jackson.  As a Green Bay Packers fan, it doesn’t bother me any…sort of.  But as an individual who lives on the West Coast, who would like to see local teams succeed on the big stage, it is troubling.

Twice now, the Oakland Raiders have missed the clutches of the playoffs narrowly.  After both years, the Head Coach has been fired.  I personally liked Tom Cable as he had an image of someone from the Raider Nation (whatever that means).  He could hang tough with all of them and really turned the team around.  His firing was saddening after Oakland beat all division opponents both times during the 2010-2011 season.  Kansas City made it past them into the playoffs.  It was sad as I personally believe Oakland would have put a better fight than KC did.  But I digress…

I was not initially fond of Hue Jackson but he kept the team together, even through the passing of owner Al Davis.  And again, they had a chance to get in.  The playoffs was all but theirs around Week 10.  All they had to do was win two or three more times.  Instead, they lose four of their last five.

Now Oakland has hired Reggie McKenzie, a front office character from Green Bay Packers, as General Manager.  That’s when this got personal for me.  But after listening to the press conference with McKenzie and Mark Davis, Al’s son, my opinion changed fast.  Bluntfully, McKenzie just wanted his own guy as coach, rather than stick with Jackson who started a good thing for Oakland, again – McKenzie just didn’t like Jackson.  Who Oakland will go with as Head Coach is up in the air.

But I am not happy at all.  I do not blame Jackson for the lost season.  The team just didn’t perform when the time came to win.

Personally, Raiders need to start establishing consistency in coaching.  They have had 6 different head coaches in a decade – not a good sign.  True legacies come when coaching is consistent.  Until the Raiders settle down with a coach for 4-5+ years, they will forever be lacking.  But what do I know?  I’m just another fan, and not even of the Raiders.

I also heard a rumor that Mark Davis is anxious to get the team back to Los Angeles. Not only is consistency lacking on the team but even the city this team plays in.

    • That would be a shame for them to move back down to L.A. I’m not sure the market would be any better than Oakland really. Chargers can’t capitalize from being the only NFL team in the area. Raiders can’t hope for more. Only thing to gain from a move is a new stadium.
