Tenacious D Promotes Comeback with Star-Studded Video

Tenacious D’s Jack Black and Kyle Glass

For six long years, Tenacious D, the rock duo consisting of Jack Black and Kyle Gass, hasn’t released anything new. Their last production was the movie “The Pick of Destiny,” which failed at the box office grossing just $8.2 million, was released way back in 2006. Finally the duo has come out with a new video, and on May 15, they will be releasing their third album titled Rize of the Fenix.

The video, titled “To Be the Best,”  isn’t a music video. Instead, it chronicles what the two have been up to in the past half-decade. Val Kilmer, Tim Robbins, Dave Grohl, and Josh Groban all make appearances in the video. According to the video, after “The Pick of Destiny” flopped Gass went insane and was institutionalized.

Gass escapes, and flees to Black’s mansion and  attempts to shoot Black, but Val Kilmer takes the bullet. After that, Gass and Black reunite but forget how to rock, so they enlist Dave Grohl and Josh Groban to help them out.

The video has the same spirit of self-mockery that Tenacious D is known for, and shows that the two still like to rock out and are ready to tour. A short clip of the first song reveals that though 6 years have passed, their talent hasn’t waned a bit.

As a long-time fan, I am very excited for the new album and tour, and I hope to see them at the end of May when they come to Oakland. I have always enjoyed their humor, and the fact that though they are very funny, they are serious about their music. Hopefully, their tour and album will do well and we won’t have to wait another six years for new material and we’ll be able to enjoy more Tenacious D for a while to come.
