Magnificent Mustaches and Bountiful Beards: The 2012 Nor Cal Beard and Mustache Competition

When my best friend, Sarah, and I left for the 2012 Northern California Beard and Mustache Competition at Folsom’s Powerhouse Pub on March 31, we weren’t sure what to expect. We had only found out about the event the day before via a flyer on a window. As we approached Powerhouse the day of the event, we saw men with beards walking towards the entrance, and we knew we were in for an exciting experience.

Inside, nearly every man had a beard or mustache. As facial hair enthusiasts, we were excited to see handlebars, styled beards, long luxurious bears, and everything in between. We went upstairs after ordering beers, and we were lucky enough to meet  Al Underwood and  Nate Johnson of the Los Angeles Beard and Mustache Club who later placed in their categories (Freestyle and Sideburns, respectively). They were extremely nice gentlemen, and were dressed in 1900s-era clothing; Al even sported a monocle and top-hat, resembling the man from Monopoly. When the competition began, we told our new friends we would yell loudly for them during the competition, and yell we did.

The categories for the competition were Business Beard, Mustache, Styled Mustache, Partial Beard, Full beard under a foot, Full beard over a foot, Freestyle, Goatee, Wiskerina (a category for lady competitors with homemade beards), Sideburns, and Crowd Favorite. The best categories were the Freestyle, Sideburns, and the Full beards over a foot. The Sideburns category included a man with full, magnificent red sideburns and a mustache with the ends curled up, dressed as a leprechaun. He had a green bucket of plastic gold coins, which he showered the crowd with when he was on stage (I’m still finding those coins in my house, I can only imagine how long the Powerhouse staff will be finding them for!). The Full beard over a foot had a contestant who had a long, dark beard and was dressed as a pirate, complete with a wooden mug he was drinking beer from. It was clear though, that despite the category, every contestant was proud of their facial hair.

A raffle was also held during a brief intermission, and a number of local businesses provided fun prizes. The Red Chair Salon and Spa, Folsom Glenn Carwash, Cowboy Comb, Roundtable Pizza, and Lucky’s Barbershop and Men’s Club were just a few of the places that provided prizes. I actually won a shirt, beard wax (which I traded with another raffle winner for a free car wash from Folsom Glenn), and a cool hat for my husband. My friend also won a raffle prize- an hour massage at the Red Chair Spa! It was quite exciting, even if we didn’t get the free pizza for a year from Roundtable or the grand prize, which was a Pabst Blue Ribbon snowboard. All in all, it was an awesome night, and I’m glad we happened to see the flyer the day before otherwise we never would have known about it.

YAAR, MATEY!! One of the contestants came dressed as a pirate. He won First Place for Crowd Favorite

The 2012 Northern California Beard and Mustache Competition at the Powerhouse Pub in Folsom was an excellent time, and I can’t wait to go next year. In the meantime, it would be fun to also attend the Los Angeles Beard and Mustache Competition on June 24th, or even the National Championship in Las Vegas in November. It was exciting to see all the interesting beards and mustaches, and I can’t wait to go to another beard event. If you like facial hair or have some facial hair of your own, then this is the event for you!

  1. Hey! Thanks for the kind words 🙂 I’m actually said leprechaun, distributor of the finest plastic coins in the world. I actually found some in a bar down the street after the competition ended!!
Anyway, I’m excited you enjoyed the event. It’s always a blast meeting new people and hearing about people’s first time experiences.
One note on the LA competition… it’s actually on June 24th, 2012. I am launching the new website tonight, and the old one is still live from last year. Sorry for the confusion, but we hope you can make it down for our event! Check in the coming days for more information

  2. Thanks for the kind words! I’m actually the leprechaun you mentioned, distributor of the finest plastic coins in the world! Funny enough, I actually found some coins at a bar down the street after the event. I think Folsom will be picking up coins for the foreseeable future.
Anyway, one note on the LA competition… It’s actually on June 24th, 2012. You said August, and that’s my fault. I meant to launch the new website last week, but ran out of time. I will be putting it up tonight or tomorrow, so check back for this year’s details!
Thanks again for the nice compliments and I’m so glad you had fun!

    • Thanks Stephen!! I will edit the post to reflect the correct date. I wasn’t sure which date it was, because I have a flyer saying it’s in June but the site says August; thank you for the clarification and thanks for reading and commenting!!
