Just Movement Robert DeLong

Seattle-born and Los Angeles-based electronic musician Robert DeLong fuses EDM influences with singer/songwriter and pop workings.  With his use of MIDI interfaces and live mixing, he creates music through keyboards, drum pads, drum sets, and gaming controllers.  His debut album Just Movement was released early 2013, summing up the influences that shape his musical world.

Its lead single “Global Concepts” (accompanied by a video that aired on various TV outlets, including MTV2, notably through its block 120 Minutes) provides a taste of what is to come in the rest of the album.  This electro-dance-driven track is mixed with funky drums and percussion reminiscent of Caribbean rhythms.  When the song asks the listener through its lyric, “Did I make you [expletive] dance?” this question seems to become the album’s mission statement, especially considering the sounds on the other tracks.

In addition to the lead single, there are also a handful of highlights that make this album worth listening to. “Here” is a track that delivers a four-to-the-floor rhythm and vocal harmonies that supply a background for the lyrics sung. “Few Years Make” shows off the influence of chiptune while providing a first-person narrative in the lyrics. “Complex By Degree” has a slight influence of dubstep while its lyrics send a clear message that there is no definite aspect of humans that make them different from other species.

In conclusion, this album is worth checking out.  If the aforementioned songs are satisfying enough upon listening to them, I recommend the entire album, thus making this my album pick for March 2013.  That about wraps up my article for Aerrow Shapiro’s Record Club.  Tune in next time at around the first week of next month for another album pick.
