Knights of Badassdom Review (Spoilers)

knights of badassdom

Knights of Badassdom is a movie about relationships and how your ex can tear your heart out. It’s about how sometimes we end up with someone who tries to change who we are. After losing these people we may end up lost, but it’s only then that we can truly remember who we really are. There’s also LARP-ing, blood thirsty monsters- one of which looks exactly like our main character “Joe” ‘s ex-girlfriend which brings messy break-up’s to another level. Oh, and Doom Metal, which may have been one of the cooler parts of the movie.

knights-of-badassdom-1600So here’s the deal if you haven’t been obsessively following the movie since the trailer. Joe is your average guy, he works as a mechanic and plays Doom Metal on the side which in all honesty he isn’t bad at, I’ll be hunting down the soundtrack after this blog post. Now, he’s been dating a woman who breaks his heart, and his friends drug him and take him out to LARP(Live Action Role-play) to cheer him up. If you haven’t heard of LARP-ing before, it’s a lot like Dungeons and Dragons on steroids, or a mix between a Renaissance fair and a tabletop game. People get dressed up as their characters and swing foam swords at each other while fighting “demons” and “dragons”. While Joe is out LARP-ing one of his friends, whose playing as a wizard, uses an ancient book of spells that he bought off ebay as a prop and ends up accidentally summoning a succubus from hell. I mean who hasn’t been there? Obviously things go to hell (hahaha) as a demon brought back looking like Joe’s ex-girlfriend goes on a murdering rampage. Somehow Joe and his friends must stop a demon from destroying the world.

Knights of Badassdom had a trailer showcased in 2011 at a Comic-Con panel, and it’s true on occasion we have to wait for what seems like years after knights of badassdom peter dinklageseeing a trailer, but it’s rare that it ever happens anymore. So what was with the hold up? Why have we had to wait 3 years for an action-packed thrill ride featuring such actors as Ryan Kwanten (True Blood), Summer Glau (Firefly), Steve Zahn (Saving Silverman), Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones) and others? After doing some digging, it seems that there’s a lot of mud being thrown, and names being called. The original director, Joe Lynch, wasn’t capable of finishing the film either, and it doesn’t sound like it was by his choice, but all in all the film ended up turning out alright after Wade Bradley got his hands on it. It does have some tell tale animation that looks like it belongs on a B movie from 10 years ago, but for the most part things do look pretty cohesive throughout the film.

If you happened to catch the movie “Jennifer’s Body” this flick is somewhat similar, or even “feast” to a lesser degree; even though you have a demon running around killing people it doesn’t have that creepy  “I’m not going to be able to sleep tonight” feeling you get off of some more hardcore horror flicks. Personally I really enjoyed it, but I also have a thing for cheesy B horror movies.

  11. […] What originally got me excited about the show was the producer and writer Rockne S. O’Bannon who was the creator of one of my favorite shows Farscape. Defiance is similar with 2 full languages documented by David J. Peterson who also worked on Game of thrones and Thor: The Dark World. The depth of the Votan races goes further than their language as each culture is established through their attire, customs, and musical styles which is a unique score created for the show by Bear Mcreary. The music is actually very good, but it shouldn’t be surprising as Bear Mcreary has been working on some really excellent scores lately one of my favorite being from the movie Knights of Badassdom.
