The Americans: The Most Underrated Show on Television

The only Cold War-era show on tv, FX’s The American’s, starts their second season on Friday, February 28 at 10 pm and I couldn’t be more excited.

FX_The_Americans_Keri_MatthSet in 1981 America, Phillip Jennings (Matthew Rhys) and Elizabeth Jennings (Keri Russell) are Russian spies living in suburban Washington, D.C. They live a quiet family life by day with their two children Henry (Keidrich Sellati) and Paige (Holly Taylor), but by night Phillip and Elizabeth engage in high-level KGB activity. In the first episode, the stakes are raised for the pair when they learn their new neighbor Stan Beeman (Noah Emmerich) is an FBI agent who works in Counter Intelligence and is trying to Noah-Emmerich-and-Matthew-Rhys-in-THE-AMERICANS-Episode-1.02-The-Clockfind Russian spies living in the US.

Throughout season 1, Phillip and Elizabeth go to extreme lengths to carry out their missions. They often wear elaborate, convincing costumes for their undercover work, and endure hardships to prove their loyalty to the Communist cause.

The Americans: episode twoWhile the covert operations are the main appeal of the show, it is also interesting to see how Elizabeth and Philip handle raising their children while hiding their true identities. Elizabeth often worries about whether or not her children are becoming “too American,” and hopes that they turn out to be Socialists. Throughout the first season, thirteen year old Paige is beginning to notice something is amiss with her parents, and both Elizabeth and Phillip worry about what would happen if their children knew their secret. Season 2 will hopefully play up this fear, as Paige matures and begins to rebel against her parents.

the americansTo prepare for the new season, I’ve been re-watching season 1. Some episodes are seem slow, but the pay-off when something big happens is worth it, especially when it seems like Stan has Phillip and Elizabeth figured out. Elizabeth is a force to be reckoned with, and protects her secrets and her famiy at all costs. Phillip is a master actor, and manipulates people to get the exact information he wants.

Season 2 starts on February 28, and I hope its as good as the first.
