Growing up in Monterey County, where soccer is practically a religion, having a professional soccer team has always been a dream. As close to a pro team that we ever had in Monterey County was the Salinas Jaguars or the Salinas Samba. Now that I have lived in Sacramento for the past three years and have been able to experience a professional basketball game and how passionate the Sacramento fans are, I can only imagine how the sports scene is going to grow once the Sacramento Republic FC start to play.
The team was founded on December 3rd, 2012 and although it still isn’t part of the Major League Soccer, which is our professional league, the Sacramento Republic will be part of the USL Pro League, which is something like the D-League for basketball. The team will be lead by the very well known Predrag “Preki” Radosavljevic, who was a big time player back in the 90’s for our Men’s National Team. The team will be sporting the colors that are represented in our state flag, maroon and white, which is also what the crest will be composed of, alongside with our famous California Bear and our city motto, “Urbs Indomita” meaning The Indomitable City. The team’s jerseys will be manufactured by the Italian brand Lotto and will have UC Davis Children’s Hospital’s name on the front since they will be sponsoring the team until the 2016 season.
The club was originally supposed to play at Hughes Stadium, located at the Sacramento City College, which holds up
to 20,311 seats, but a new plan has been put on the table. As of November of 2013, it was announced that the Sacramento Republic will be holding their home games at a new stadium built inside of the Cal Expo which will hold 8,000 people, sponsored by Ovations Food Service. I feel very excited to witness the creation of this soccer team and to have the opportunity to attend some of the future games with my friends and have a great time. I attended the first annual Sacramento Soccer Day and the turnout was impressive. I know that once this team is up and running, the fans will really come and support the team with that Sacramento Love that is shown to all the local teams.
