There’s a new season of Defiance, and if you’re a little hazy on the details of the show I’ve got a small synopsis following this sentence; if you just came for season 2 spoiler goodness then you can start on paragraph 3. The series is centered around the law-keeper for defiance Joshua Nolan played by Grant Bowler(True Blood, Lost, Farscape) his back-story is that of a soldier in a war between humanity and an alien race known as the “Votan”. Votan is an umbrella term encompassing 5 different races who ran off from a dying world hoping to take ours as their new home. The series takes place in the year 2046 which is 15 years after the war ended; humanity and the Votan have reached a shaky truce, and are actively trying to rebuild civilization in a western post-apocalyptic setting. Now with the help of Nolan’s daughter/sidekick Irisa played by Stephanie Leonidas(Bram Stoker’s Dracula 2006) he basically ends up saving the town from cataclysmic destruction on a weekly basis. This series feels a lot like Eureka subbing out the science for Aliens, future tech and a town that looks like it would be at home in a Fallout game.
What originally got me excited about the show was the producer and writer Rockne S. O’Bannon who was the creator of one of my favorite shows Farscape. Defiance is similar with 2 full languages documented by David J. Peterson who also worked on Game of thrones and Thor: The Dark World. The depth of the Votan races goes further than their language as each culture is established through their attire, customs, and musical styles which is a unique score created for the show by Bear Mcreary. The music is actually very good, but it shouldn’t be surprising as Bear Mcreary has been working on some really excellent scores lately one of my favorite being from the movie Knights of Badassdom.
Season 2 Spoilers
It appears that Nolan has gained some weight since our last having seen him, which struck me as a bit strange since he’s been running around trying to find his daughter. Irisa has longer hair, and appears to have lost her mind much in the same vein as the character Niki Sanders in Heroes. The duo meet up early into season 2 and make their way for defiance because Irisa feels like it for some reason, upon their arrival they are met with hostility. Defiance resisted the presence of the Earth Republic but failed miserably, as we join them the town has been taken over by the Earth Republic; Nolan makes himself useful and is offered his old position of Law Keeper. Stahma Tarr played by Jaime Murray(Dexter, Warehouse 13) has made her move to take over the family business instead of her usual place of hiding in the shadows and playing the people around her as if they were marionettes. Datak Tarr played by Tony Curran(Gladiator) has found himself incarcerated thus giving his wife Stahma the space to take over.
The people in town general aren’t very happy about the new management of Defiance, and have started striking out against the Earth Republic. Amanda Rosewater played by Julie Benz(Dexter, Angel) after having lost the election has taken on an advisory role to the new mayor as well as running the NeedWant upon Kenya’s disappearance; Amanda also seems to have begun developing a relationship with Nolan this season.
I’ve really been enjoying this season so far, towards the end of the last season it felt like a little too much was going on. The new season seems to have simplified things. Although we still have to worry about what’s going on with Irisa, the town and the people that live there have all changed drastically and the story has slowed down as we become acquainted with what the town has become. I’m still not sure if this is going to hold up to Farscape standards, but I do have higher hopes for this season than the last one. I’d give it a 7/10.
