My Experience at Sac State’s Community Forum and Student Panel

On Thursday April 18th, 2019 Sacramento Councilman Allen Warren presented a community forum and student panel at Sac State. Guests speakers included President Nelson, Sacramento Vice Mayor Eric Guerra, Cedric the Entertainer, Gabby Trejo, Jaswant S. Bains, Matt Ball, Danny Glover, and more.

Some of these names are well-known, and some of these names are not recognized as much as they should be. Here are some of the guests’ claims to fame.

Cedric the Entertainer: Famous actor, King of Comedy, Producer

Gabby Trejo: Organizer, Sacramento ACT

Jaswant S Bains: President and CEO of Sacramento Packing, Inc.

Matt Ball: Director of Public Affairs, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints

Danny Glover: Famous actor, Human rights champion, Activist

The panelists discussed race and its social impacts, their personal experiences with race, and other topics along the same line.

I really liked the diverse group of panelists. Their diversity was relevant to the audience because they all had stories that a variety a people could understand. They were all of different races, ages, work field, social economic status and education. This diversity likely helped the audience to not feel excluded with the topics discussed.

To be honest, I didn’t know about the panel until thirty minutes before it began. I was lucky because I was looking at flyers for upcoming campus events and saw the panel announcement. At first I thought it was something from the education department, which just so happens to be my major. I then noticed Cedric the Entertainer and Danny Glover and saw that it was going to be a panel about race and social justice. When I saw that other speakers were a part of the Sacramento community, I was intrigued and decided to go. I was curious about the topics they would discuss and the who would be in the audience.

Before I left, the host of the event asked the panelists and the audience if the world is where we want it to be? Everyone said no with humorous laughter. The host then asked everyone why not and how can we make changes to the world that we live in. There were various solutions and they all seemed possible. Everything happens over time, and I am looking forward to seeing more positive changes happen for everyone and everything.
