Sound City Documentary Review

sound cityLast year, on March 12, ex- Nirvana drummer/Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl, released his directorial debut, Sound City. Sound City is a documentary about a California recording complex that served as a recording studio to artists such as Neil Young, Fleetwood Mac, Tom Petty, Rick Springsfield, Nine Inch Nails, Rage Against the Machine, Nirvana, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Top 5 Movie Soundtracks

I’m not much of a movie buff, but one thing I do know is music, more specifically, hip-hop music. There has been some prominent movies released in my lifetime, and their soundtracks did not fail to deliver. Here’s my top 5 movie soundtrack list of all time.

5. Boomerang
This movie was hilarious and one of my personal favorites from Eddie Murphy. The soundtrack was pretty good too. It’s the softest album on my list, due to a large presence of R&B, but it still managed to produce the classic track, “Hot Sex” by A Tribe Called Quest. CityWalk Rocks New Year’s Eve

By: Joanne Serrieh

I always say that last minute plans turn out to be the best. A few weeks before winter break I came across an event page on Facebook about an annual New Year’s event that is put together by Universal CityWalk in Universal City, California. It was featuring one of my favorite former contestants from The Voice, Diego Val, and another former contestant named Jamar Rogers. The event page stated that there will be four different stages set up throughout CityWalk where three of the stages will have live DJs and the main stage will also have a DJ and live performances by Diego Val and Jamar Rogers. The price was $55 per vehicle to park and the price included ALL of the entertainment for the night. Yes, this sounded like it was too good to be true to me. I did some research and found some pictures and videos from the 2012 New Year’s Eve event and it looked pretty awesome so I thought it would be fun to go and check it out.

Really?! With Calilove: California State Lawmakers

Recently, California state Governor Jerry Brown signed into law 48 “gut-and-amend” bills. “Gut-and-amend” refers to the process of deleting the language of existing bills during the last weeks of the legislative session and inserting something new and unrelated to the original bill. This process requires no public oversight, and these bills are not voted on by the Senate or Assembly. AB 853 originally was a bill about veterans receiving tuition for community colleges, but wound up at the last minute to be changed to AB 376 to ban the removal of shark fins. This ridiculous government practice brings me to my version of Saturday Night Live‘s Seth Meyers “Weekend Update” skit “Really!?!”  Today’s edition: California State Lawmakers. [Read more…]
